Fechin Master Study
A bearded sitter in a flat cap leans his head into one hand, eyes fixed with a steady, inward gaze. The face and cap carry the richest color—warm reds, umbers, and violets—while the shirt and surrounding space dissolve into whites and cool grays. Edges slip in and out of focus so that features flicker from the broken surface, an effect heightened by the diagonal tilt of the head and the casually bent wrist.
Thick, physical paint is the subject as much as the figure. Palette-knife swathes and short, loaded strokes build ridges that catch light, with scumbles of blue-green and ochre breathing into the neutral field. Forms are suggested rather than traced: a collar turns with a single plane, a hand resolves from intersecting facets, and the background’s abstract marks keep the portrait dynamic and open—true to Fechin’s energetic, tactile manner.
