2023 | 26″ x 36″ | Oil on Linen

A gray horse stands three-quarter to the viewer with its head turned left, ears pricked and weight balanced lightly on the forefeet. The figure fills the vertical format, framed by a warm umber field that concentrates behind the body and fades to raw linen at the edges. Raking light from the upper left grazes the withers, ribcage, and muzzle, while a cool shadow pools beneath the hooves to anchor the stance.

Brushwork is economical and tactile: scumbled lights ride across the coat, darker passages knit into the neck and belly, and lost-and-found edges around the mane and tail keep the contour lively. Copper notes in the tail, knees, and hooves play against the gray body and the burnt-sienna ground, giving the study warmth and presence. The exposed margins suggest a studio immediacy that suits the direct, observational character of the piece.
