This is first in a series of three snow day paintings. This was a day of deep snow and magical colors. The ponchos mostly kept us warm; even the dogs were cold. In the background is a hunter’s cabin that was a jump off point and the last warmth of the day. I wanted to document an unusual day of deep snow on the eastern side of Patagonia. My friend Lucas is riding in the lead. I rode out ahead of the group for a few seconds and made a quick sketch and some photographs. I thought that the colors of the sky and the snow would make a good painting. This is the third attempt to capture the colors in this scene. I ended up using pastels on linen to capture the colors. The first two attempts ended up in the waste bin. This painting is framed under conservation glass. Lucas was after a rogue puma that had killed domestic animals at a neighbor’s ranch. While we never saw a puma, it was quite the adventure. I hope that this painting shows the exuberance of the start of the day and that the third painting shows everyone’s exhaustion.
