Riders In A Snow Storm
2023 | 32 x 72 in | Soft Pastel on Linen
It was the kind of day that tested both horse and rider. The cold was sharp, the sky pressed low with heavy clouds, and the Patagonian steppe stretched away in endless whiteness. I had fallen back with the photographer, apart from the main group, to capture this moment. Everyone else wanted to turn back, but Lucas, the figure on the right, kept going with quiet determination, carrying the same grit and presence often seen in John Wayne.
The pale tones of snow and sky blur the horizon until it nearly vanishes, giving the scene an almost surreal quality. Sparse brush breaks through the snow, reminding us of the rugged land beneath the storm. Painted in pastel on linen, the work balances atmosphere with character, conveying both the vastness of Patagonia and the resilience of the riders who move across it.
